Subject: Review outcome FRG1

Hello Dr. Gudhimella and Dr. Deguchi,

Your Faculty Research Grant proposal entitled ‘Salivary Hormone Analysis in Correlation with Growth Anticipation for Comprehensive Orthodontics’’ has been reviewed favorably by the ULSD Research Committee.

Reviewer comments:

This application was deemed meritorious and approval for funding is possible pending additional information, which can be submitted at any time.

FRG1: Strengths:

The topic of this application, seeking to determine if growth hormones in saliva can be detected and correlated with skeletal growth characteristics in female orthodontic patients, has merit and significance.

FRG1: Weaknesses:

It should be noted that the current proposal is related to a previous ULSD Faculty Research Grant project that was funded (to Dr. Nandakumar). The previous study has not yet yielded publication. For the current version please describe how the current study design is an improvement over the previous study design. What were the obstacles in the previous study that prevented success and publication? How will the new study overcome these obstacles?

As written, the current proposal appears appear to have a sample size that is too small to yield conclusive data. A power analysis would be helpful to determine needed samples size. For power analysis an estimate of effect size will be needed. Preliminary data from the previous study should be helpful to estimate the effect size.

Please describe what information is on the IRB proposal. Is hand/wrist X-ray included?

Please describe how the saliva samples will be handled.

Sincerely,

Lisa L. Sandell, PhD
